Pronunciation "A TO Z" British English pronunciation , combination of English letter and their sound

 In this blog, you will learn some pronunciation rules about the English alphabet

remember in English all rules are not fixed there were some exceptions also  



there are many English dialects also there are differences between them for example between RP (/ɑː/) and American (/æ/) pronunciations of words like bath and ask, although most native British English speakers do, in fact, pronounce them /æ/. 

we have mentioned here as per standard academic English which is very close to British pronunciation 

Pronunciation of the letter "A"

A =  

As /æ/

  • use A as /æ/ before final consonants: am - and - at - back - bad - bag - bat - cat - fan - ham - hand - land - man - map - sand - stand
  • use A as /æ/ before double consonant or "ck": attack - battle - carry - cattle - channel - gallery - grammar - happen - happy - jacket - passenger - traffic
  • use A as /æ/ before single consonant: a’verage - b'alance - damage - family - have - January - manage - national - natural - value
  • other: absolutely - actually - angry - aspect - capture - contract - factor - handle - transport

As /ɑː/

  • before f, '’s and th
before final consonants: ask - bath - half - last - past - path - staff - task before double consonant: giraffe - staffer other: basket - pastor - rather

  • before n: answer - can’t - France - implant

A as /ɑː/ in General american 

  • calm - facade - father - koala - lama - llama - nuance - palm - spa
  • before r: are - art - car - card - carpet - dark - far - garden - large - market - park - part - scar - scarf - start

As /eɪ/

one very important concept to learn in English pronunciation is Magic "E"

  • with magic e: ache - age - bake - blame - brake - cake - date - escape - fake - game - gate - hake - lake - late - male - make - name - pale - plate - sale - same - sane - shake - snake - stale - state - take - trade - wake - whale

As /ɔ:/

  • before final "ll": all - ball - call - fall - hall - mall - small - stall - tall - wall

  • “alk” ending: balk - caulk - chalk - stalk - talk - walk

Pronunciation of the letter "B"

B= /bi:/

The letter B, lower case b (pronounced /biː/)

Sometime exceptionally "b" can be silent.

bomb - climb /klaɪm/ - comb /kəʊm/ - crumb - debt - debtor - doubt - dumb - lamb - limb - numb - plumber - subpoena /səˈpiːnə/ - subtle - thumb - tomb /tuːm/ - womb /wuːm/

Pronunciation of the letter "C"   

letter c can be pronounced in two way 

The first-way c as /k/

i.e  c  + (a,o,u) for example call , cat, can, come,cut

when c is at the end of a word it is also pronounced as /k/ like basic, music

C + (consonant) is pronounce as quick /k/ that create c + consonant cluster 

The first-way c as /s/ or /ʃ /     

if the letter C is before the letter i,e, or y then it is pronounced as /s/

i.e. C + ( i,e,y) for example cyclone ,cycle ,centre,ice ,nice ,rice ,city 

/ʃ /   special, same, 

C+ two or more vowel letters  create  /ʃ / like an ocean, special, precious

* English is a language there are many exceptions your should always double-check with a dictionary

Pronunciation of the letter "D"   

D = /di:/

D can be pronounced differently depending on where is it appearing in the sentences 

Beginning 

normally D has a strong /d/ sound at the beginning of a word

Middle
 
at the middle of a word  also /d/ sound 

End 

at the end of the world it is little/slightly softer like  study

D is pronounced as /t/ in the past tense, in all regular verbs end in a voiceless consonant sound 

Ch, F, K, P, S, Sh, T, and Th (as in "thing")

kicked, wished, helped 

when ends with t or d it is pronounced as /id/ or /ud /   /id/ is a widely accepted use where e as /i/ ex. wanted

some of the words d pronounced as  /dʒ/ like..   soldier  

for  words containing dg:  edge, ledge, bridge , badge, 
for  words containing dj:  adjust 
for  words containing du:  education, individual 

in some words when d is middle in two consonants it is usually silent like handsome, sandwich

Pronunciation of the letter "E"  

e as /i:/   long sound of e 

when generally E + consonant + E  create a long e sound 

when two ee letters together in words also create a long e sound 
when ea comes in some word it creates a long e sound like jeans, teacher, meat 
when ei comes in some words it creates long a long e sound like protein, ceiling 
when ei comes in some words it creates long a long e sound like piece, briefcase,belive 

e as  /e/

word end with e + consonant we pronounce e as  /e/ like get,set,met,bet       
word end with e + consonant + vowel  we pronounce e as  /e/ like exit,never, level
words with e+the   we pronounce e as  /e/ like wether, together
words  with ea we pronounce e as /e/ for example read (past), weather,head, dead

e as  /ɜː/ long sound 
word end with er we pronounce e as  /ɜː like her were, person, verb, refer
word end with ear we pronounce e as  /ɜː like  earth, learn, early, search
some time with eur  like  sboteur 

e as  /ɪə/ double vowel 

word with  ea+r we pronounce e as  /ɪə/ like hear, near, fear, fear
in some words, with ea we pronounce e as  /ɪə/ like the idea, really 
in some words, with ee we pronounce e as  /ɪə/ beer, career, engineer, 
in some words, with er,eo and ei we pronounce e as  /ɪə/ hero, serious, era, weird, theory

some times ei , ey and eight are pronounced as /aI/ like nice, eye

e as  /eə/   with ere, ear  like  there, where, bear, pear, wear,
