Basic Modals Short Notes

 

Can : power , ability , capacity     (present)           -

Can : giving permission

 

Could  : power , ability , capacity (past)              

 

Can :  true / theoretical possibility         everyone can make a mistake.”

Could : remote possibility *                     there could be a bomb under your seat”

 

Can : friendly request                            “can i take your bike”

Can : formal request                           “could i talk to mr. Shukla”

 

May :  possibility / uncertainty          “it may rain tonight “

May : wish , blessing                                     “may you live long !”

 

May : more possibility

Might : less possibility

Must : very extreme  possibly

 

May : respectfully request

 

Shall :    I/we             use with interrogative only now a days  “ Suggestion

 

Command, promise, threat, determination, compulsion, advice, 

 

Let us Action together, Shall we?

 

Shall – Should

Will- would in the past

 

Dare and need both main verb and model

Would

Past habit:                                “I would go to school by bus”

Preference /'choice                “I would rather die that beg “

                                                “I would like to have banana “ 

If sentence of past will changes to would                              “He hoped that he would pass.”

 

Would', 'used to' 'Simple Past tense’ these are used to express Routine Action of past

 

Imagination                             “If I were a bird, I would fly in the sky”

I wish, as though, if, as if, would that and suppose  use were instead of was

Polite request                                      Would you help me”

Probability                             He would be sleeping”

Wish                                       I wish, India would become a developed country soon”

Would like to'                        I would like to talk to the manager”

 

Should

Suggestion                              You should study English”

Advice                                    You should not laugh at his mistakes”

After least                               “He ran fast lest he should miss the train”

 

Ought to

Moral obligation                    We ought to love our country.”

Must

Compulsion                            Candidates must write in ink.”

Fixed determination              India must win the world cup”

Duty                                        “A soldier must fight for his country”
